Having been a Cubase user for many years and they charge for every version update, I found myself using an old out dated DAW. SO on my search I ran across Reaper v5.11. I have been using it for a month or so,and it is much better than Cubase. Uses much lower resources, and runs stable. Works with all the new VST's and VSTi. And the full version is $60! How can you go wrong? Plus you're not stuck with the stock interface, you can change every thing about the appearance. Mine actually has the ProTools skin right now, but there are hundreds to choose from. Give it a shot, it's free for trial period. End results for me are pretty much the same as Cubase other than the new VST3 plugins work in Reaper Well worth the look.
I will be doing an indepth look at Reaper in the Blog on Tone Freak Lab Check out our main site as for more info. Here's the link to Reapers Website
