Utter the words "three amp rig" and EJ may pop into the heads of some of you. If it does you're not far off as I am indeed inpired by his setup in parts and appreciate the functionality of such an arrangement. I chose the rack approach, for better or worse as although it makes the rig easier to tweak for the user it could be somewhat confusing and you would have to go with the rack mount units available.
The heart of it is the Egnater M4 - in this case an early, single channel one w. FX-loop - which then runs into three choices of modified output amplifiers and then into modified cabinets. The rig is in constant development but at present the signal paths are as follows:
Lead: Egnater SL (Marshall JMP) module -> Marshall poweramp w. KT77s -> Marshall 2556 2x12 cab to be fitted with WGS ET65s (now has Fane Axa 12s)
Rhythmm: Egnater VX (Vox AC30) module -> Marshall poweramp w. KT88s -> Marshall 1966 2x12 cab to be fitted with some other WGS (Liberators perhaps) speakers (now has Fane Medusa 150Cs)
Cleans: Egnater Twin (Fender Blackface) module -> Mesa/ Boogie poweramp w. 6L6GCs -> Marshall 1966 2x12 cab likely to be fitted with WGS ET90s w. aluminium dustcaps or Weber 12F150Ws or similar (now has Fane Elite 12s)
I'm in the process of having the transformers of the Marshall power amps replaced with something lower headroom than stock for lead and larger headroom than stock for rhythm. The Marshall 9100 (similar to the EL34 50-50) actually lends itself well for modifications and with the inclination could for instance easily be made into the 2x100W worth 9200 (EL34 100-100) model. In this case I added to the screen grid resistance on the lead side and off-set the sockets on the rhythm side.
Modifications to the cabs are mainly replacements of backboards + some damping and handle replacements. These diagonaly oriented 2x12 are decent quality, quite Marshall-y sounding and sound 90% of a fully blown 1960 4x12. The backboard replacements really help with adding body and weight to their sound.
